On February 2, 2018 the infamous Ground Hog came out of the dark and saw his own shadow! That means we still have 6 more weeks of winter! If you’re running out of fun activities to keep the kids busy indoors, look no further as we have some cool STEM activities that the kids can do while they’re at home.
The great thing is that hot chocolate science is an easy STEM activity that is great for kids of all ages. What’s even better, is that it involves chocolate! Which kid can say no to hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day?
Make Hot Chocolate Science
What You’ll Need
- Hot chocolate powder
- Milk or Water (Whichever the kids prefer)
- 3 cups or mugs
- Marshmallows
- Microwave
- Spoon
- Timer
Creating hot chocolate science is fun and easy. It’s pretty much the same as preparing the drink in regular form. The major difference is that the kids are going to record numbers on how fast the hot chocolate dissolved in varying temperatures of hot water or milk.
Step 1
Measure the same amount of milk into three identical cups.
Step 2
Heat one cup in a microwave for 1 minute, one for 40 seconds, and one for 20 seconds.
Step 3
Add the same amount of hot chocolate powder to each and give it a good stir.
Step 4
Place several marshmallows on the top of each cup; be careful that they don’t drop below the surface.
Step 5
Make observations of each cup at 30 second intervals.
Step 6
Let the kids record the data and decorate their hot chocolate drinks with sprinkles, whipped cream, and more marshmellows!
